Position Summary: 

This is a Registered Nurse (RN) delegated position (Nurse Practice Act RCW 28A.210.260 and 28A.210.280).  The Health Room Assistant (HRA) will work directly under the license of the RN.  The HRA’s primary responsibility is assisting the RN in implementing school health services.  The HRA receives direct and indirect supervision and delegation from the building RN regarding health care issues (Nurse Practice Act RCW 18.79 and 18.130, WAC 246-840) and receives direction from the building principal on issues other than health.  (Code of Professional Conduct WAC 180-87)

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • No Child Left Behind requirements (copy Associate of Arts degree or copy of official college transcript with evidence of 72.0 college- level quarter credit hours or copy of Parapro Assessment with score of 461 or higher – documentation required at time of application)
  • Ability to stoop, crouch, crawl, bend, kneel, and stand for long periods of time
  • 1st Aid & Adult/Child CPR training (completed within 30 days from date of hire and to be maintained for the duration of this job)
  • Citrix training in the health module (obtain within 60 days of hire date – district provided)
  • Blood borne Pathogens training (obtain within 60 days of hire date and annually thereafter – district provided)
  • AED training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – district provided)
  • HIPPA/FERPA training to be provided by district’s Health Service Coordinator
  • Extensive orientation will be provided by district’s Health Service Coordinator
  • Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, and language diversity preferred
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance
  • Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later)
  • I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
  • Completion of all district-required training within thirty (30) calendars days from hire date

Essential Job Functions: 

This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.  Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

  • Assist RN in implementing school health services
  • Maintain student school health records
  • Provide student and staff care as it relates to injuries or illnesses
  • Explain documents and requirements and answers procedural inquiries
  • Perform data entry and word processing functions
  • Maintain, and retrieve immunization, scoliosis, and vision data for student compliance with district, state, and federal regulations
  • Maintain and retrieve a variety of health files, logs and other records/documents (computer and hard copy including confidential files) to ensure accurate, up-to-date information is available
  • Maintain inventory of health room supplies
  • Administer medication and implement health care plans as directed by RN
  • Conduct student checks for communicable parasites as needed
  • Generate reports and other required information
  • Attend meetings and training as directed
  • Organize and oversees the health screenings and clinics in the building
  • Supervise and correct students as necessary to maintain a safe environment
  • May escort students to and from locations
  • Maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regular work hours
  • Professionally interact with students, staff, and public
  • Comply with all district policies and procedures
  • Perform related duties as requested or assigned by RN

  • Ability to integrate medical, behavioral, and student/staff crisis interventions
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Knowledge and application of FERPA and HIPPA laws regarding medical information and confidentiality, laws pertaining to the administration of oral medication, communicable diseases, immunizations, district health services policies and procedures, etc.
  • Skills in keyboarding on PC computer and knowledge of related software
  • Skills in written and oral communications and familiarity with medical terminology
  • Skills in handling confidential matters
  • Skills in operating a PC computer utilizing district-adopted software
  • Skills in learning and interpreting assignments, procedures, rules, and regulations

 

Work Environment: 

The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  The employee is confined to a work area; required to have precise control of fingers and hand movements; experiences constant interruptions and inflexible deadlines; and must be able to stoop, crouch, crawl, bend, kneel, stand for periods of time, and lift in order to assist a student with personal care.  The employee is required to deal with distraught and/or angry persons and is exposed to infectious diseases carried by children.  The noise level in the work environment is acceptable to this particular environment and can vary depending upon daily activity but will remain within acceptable ranges.

 

Evaluation: 

This position shall be evaluated annually by the Building Principal on building issues and by the RN (RCW 18.79.040(1) and 18.79.260(2) on health related issues pursuant to the currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria.
